Through my entrepreneurial organization, Enactus, at the University of Iowa, we have created a project aimed at helping save the orangutans. The rate at which animal species are going extinct is contributing towards a biodiversity crisis. We are losing animals at a rate that is 1,000 to 10,000 times higher than they would off natural causes. This is especially prevalent in Indonesia, which holds the highest. deforestation rate in the world. Three hundred football fields of rainforests are cleared every hour to make way for palm oil plantations in Indonesia. As a result of this, twenty-five orangutans die every day as they lose their source of food, home, and are forced into closer quarters with poachers who kill or sell them in the illegal pet market.
Enactus is determined to combat this issue. We are currently in the works of creating our own t-shirts. This t-shirt will have a tree on the back with the roots merging together to form a heart. This design represents our determination to help these dying animals. We are working on partnering with the Orangutan Foundation, where we then can donate a portion of our proceeds to. More information coming soon!!
